While carbon capture and storage systems collect carbon dioxide at the source, such as power plants, direct air capture systems extract it from the atmosphere.

Additional insights we found via S&P Global Energy

  1. CCS systems can use filters and targeting chemicals to react with and gather CO₂ in environments where other molecules from production processes are known and can be engineered around accordingly.

  2. DAC systems are significantly more expensive than CCS because CO₂ is highly diluted in the atmosphere and requires large fans to process enormous volumes of air to collect the same quantities of the greenhouse gas.

  3. In both systems, targeting molecules that selectively bind CO₂ are heated to high temperatures to release pure CO₂—an energy-intensive process—which is then compressed before being transported for storage.
