Additional insights we found via Reactions
In the forward reaction, hydrogen gas is fed to one side of a fuel cell, where it is split into protons and electrons, and while the protons cross a membrane to the other side of the cell, electrons move along a wire, powering an electric motor.
At the other side of the fuel cell, oxygen combines with the protons—hydrogen ions—that have crossed the membrane and the electrons that have passed through the circuit to produce water.
In the reverse reaction, known as electrolysis, an energy source, such as sunlight, splits water back into hydrogen and oxygen, forming a rechargeable, carbon-emissions-free system.
As of 2021, the most common method for producing hydrogen gas is natural gas reforming—the processing of methane—which also releases carbon dioxide.
