In the photovoltaic effect, light generates electricity by creating a charge imbalance after knocking electrons out of atoms in the semiconducting materials of solar cells.

Additional insights we found via The Engineering Mindset

  1. A wire connecting the regions of ejected and collected, energized electrons allows them to flow back, balancing the charges and producing an electric current that can be harnessed to power devices.

  2. Solar farms are composed of rows of solar modules, each consisting of multiple solar cells, each comprising a positive electrode from which electrons are emitted and "fingers"—narrow strips of metal that run atop the positive electrode to collect electrons.

  3. In a solar cell, an antireflective coating and rough surfaces help maximize light absorption, while charge controllers regulate the flow of charge into batteries to prevent discharging at night and ensure safe charging voltage during the day.
