"Obsession" director Curry Barker stated that he was inspired by "Treehouse of Horror II," the 1991 Halloween special of "The Simpsons," which featured a storyline in which Homer buys a monkey's paw that grants wishes, though the wishes always end in misery.
"Obsession" largely follows the same premise: Its main character uses a magic item to wish that the girl he desires loves him more than anything in the world; soon after the wish, she grows obsessed with him to a hyper-literal degree.
"The Simpsons" episode itself is based on "The Monkey's Paw," a 1902 short story by W.W. Jacobs that likewise features an object that grants wishes, but with sinister ends.
