In the summer months, the Eiffel Tower grows a few millimeters and leans slightly to one side because sunlight warms the metal, causing it to expand.

As they absorb thermal energy, the atoms within metals vibrate more vigorously, weakening the forces between them and causing the material to expand.
Because sunlight only directly hits one of the four sides of the tower, it expands more on that side than the other three, causing the tilting away from the sun.
As the sun moves across the sky, this tilting causes the tower to move in a circular path approximately 15 centimeters in diameter.
During the colder winter months, the metal contracts, shrinking the tower by a few millimeters.
