The preprint paper is by a University of Oxford biologist skeptical of the centenarians' ages in so-called blue zones, suggesting that, among other concerns, modern recordkeeping is associated with a massive drop in supercentenarian claims.
As of June 2026, the biologist's paper had not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal, though the author penned the first draft in 2019 and told STAT News that, to date, it has undergone nine rounds of review at BMJ Public Health—far more than is typical for most scientific papers.
