The 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York, later simply called "the Armory Show," introduced Americans to Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, and Duchamp.
It's believed to be the first time the term "avant-garde," meaning "cutting-edge," was used to describe painting and sculpture.
The amount of artwork depicting nudity was especially scandalous for the American audience; one of the show's most controversial works was Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase, which one critic said was like "an explosion in a shingle factory."
