The underlying fabric of the universe—spacetime—changes shape in the presence of mass and energy, which affects measurements of space and time.

Additional insights we found via Symmetry Magazine

  1. According to general relativity, observers in deeper gravitational wells—that is, environments with a stronger acceleration due to gravity—will undergo a slower passage of time than distant observers outside the well, but both will agree on the speed of light.

  2. The warping of spacetime created by mass and energy gives rise to what we perceive as the force of gravity, causing objects moving along what would be straight-line paths to follow trajectories through curved spacetime.

  3. The universe also sacrifices the uniformity of space and time through the phenomena of time dilation and length contraction, in which objects in motion appear to age more slowly and shrink along the direction of their motion, to ensure light does not appear slower than about 300,000,000 meters per second (186,000 miles per hour) to a moving observer.
