  1. Across the country, see a mix of Native American, English, Spanish, French, and Dutch town names, and explore how that came to be.

  2. Dutch and English names are prominent in the Northeast, where early colonists resided. New York City was called New Amsterdam before the English renamed it.

  3. Many towns get their names from significant figures and events in history. For example, Houston, Texas, got its name from US Senator Samuel Houston, and Waterloo, Illinois, got its name from the famous battle.
