A rare complication of measles is that, although a patient may appear to recover, the virus can linger in the body and continue to replicate, leading to a progressive and fatal breakdown of the central nervous system that occurs years or decades after initial infection.

  1. Known as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, or SSPE, the condition is always fatal, according to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

  2. Infants infected with measles before their first birthday are more likely to develop SSPE, with some studies suggesting that their risk is about 1 in 600. The overall risk of developing SSPE is about 1 in 10,000.
