Located in the Taurus constellation, about 6,500 light-years from Earth, the neutron star at the center of the Crab Nebula is the remnant of a supernova—the explosion of a massive star—observed by Chinese, Japanese, and Arab astronomers in 1054 CE.
The Crab Nebula was created when fusion in a massive star could no longer support its own weight, causing the star to collapse, heat up, and rebound, such that its outer layers were blown away to create a cloud of expanding filaments of gas.
