Researchers have found that Roman concrete was made by hot mixing water, aggregates such as rocks, pozzolanic materials such as volcanic ash, and quicklime, with the latter forming a calcium-saturated solution when exposed to water and recrystallizing into calcium carbonate to fill cracks.
Calcite-filled cracks in Roman concrete samples are evidence of lime-related healing, which strengthens the material and improves its durability over time.
While it becomes stronger when exposed to seawater, which helps form crystal structures that trap damaging chemicals, Roman concrete has lower compressive strength than modern concrete, which can be reinforced with internal steel reinforcement.
