Quicksand—a mixture of sand with clay or silt soaked in water that gives way when enough pressure is applied—is denser than the human body, meaning you may escape it by floating horizontally.

While depictions in media portray a rapid descent into the non-Newtonian fluid—a material whose properties change once force is applied to it—one can step off of quicksand and move forward long before sinking significantly.
If a person lets themselves sink, they should stop about halfway down because quicksand is about twice as dense as the human body, but if they thrash in place, their force will continue changing the properties of the surrounding substance, potentially triggering continued sinking.
You are unlikely to be rescued from quicksand by being quickly pulled out with a rope or branch, because moving quickly creates a vacuum in the gap where your body was, which requires enormous pressure to overcome.
To escape quicksand, it is recommended to first toss away anything that adds to your weight, such as a backpack, call for help, lie on your back to distribute your weight, slowly churn your feet to bring water into the vacuum created as you gradually lift your legs to the surface, and then use your arms to paddle your body against the quicksand horizontally toward a solid surface.
In tidal regions, the location of quicksand can change continuously as water moves in and out of areas, loosening the underlying terrain and making it difficult to mark and warn passersby of the risk in advance.
