Almost half the oxygen in the atmosphere is generated by these microorganisms, compared with an estimated 6-9% produced by the Amazon.
Sometimes used interchangeably with microalgae, phytoplankton make up less than 1% of the total mass of photosynthetic organisms on the planet.
Through photosynthesis, microalgae also absorb about 40% of global carbon emissions, though they release it when decomposing.
