Astronauts on the International Space Station have tested an algae-powered bioreactor that converts carbon dioxide, water, and light into oxygen and edible, protein-rich biomass.

The Photobioreactor integrates with existing systems to develop a closed-loop life-support system, which will be needed for astronauts on missions to the moon and Mars that will not receive ongoing resupply missions.
