H-1B Visas

Overview

The H-1B visa is the primary US program that allows employers to hire highly skilled foreign professionals in "specialty occupations" such as technology, engineering, medicine, and finance. Though temporary by statute—issued for three years and extendable to six—it often serves as a bridge to permanent residency through employer sponsorship. Created in its modern form in 1990, the program approved nearly 400,000 petitions in 2024, largely due to renewals and cap-exempt hires. Roughly 70% were born in India, and about two-thirds were for computing-related roles.
