Ogilvy's book is full of advice from one of history's best advertising professionals, including maxims like "if you think the product's too dull, I have news for you: There are no dull products, only dull writers."
Ogilvy also advised those reading his book to be "personal, direct, and natural" in their writing. "You are a human being writing to another human being ... you should be businesslike and courteous, but never stiff and impersonal," he wrote.
Given that Ogilvy was also involved in driving new agency business, he also gives advice on sales in his book, saying that one should rehearse before meetings, but "never speak from a prepared text—it locks you into a position which may become irrelevant during the meeting."
In terms of client relations, Ogilvy argued that one should tell prospective clients their weaknesses before the client finds out for themself.
Notably, Ogilvy didn’t cofound his famous advertising agency until his late 30s, exploring a variety of careers after leaving Oxford without a degree beforehand, including working as a chef in Paris and a stint as a door-to-door stove salesman.
