Additional insights we found via The Yale Review

  1. Steinem, along with cofounder Dorothy Pitman Hughes, launched the magazine as an alternative to more traditional women's magazines, such as McCall's and Ladies' Home Journal, which were largely focused on beauty and homemaking and were owned and operated by men.

  2. The "Preview" issue of Ms. hit newsstands in January 1972, though the cover read "Spring" because the magazine's editors worried sales would be slow and wanted it to appear relevant for several months.

  3. The issue featured a petition titled "We Have Had Abortions," in which 53 women—including tennis star Billie Jean King, musician Judy Collins, and Steinem herself—named themselves as having illegally undergone the operation.
