After an investigation into the May 18, 2003, elections in Schaerbeek, Belgium, the MARIA party was found to have received 4,096 more votes than were cast for them, which corresponded to flipping the 13th bit of computer memory responsible for tallying electronic votes from a zero to a one.
Cosmic rays—high-energy charged particles from space—cause bit flips, or single-event upsets, by displacing electrons in circuits, and some glitches in the electronics found in planes and satellites have been attributed to SEUs.
