Fertilizers provide essential nutrients to plants for their growth, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but an overabundance of these nutrients may also harm plants.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Oregon State University

  1. Nitrogen accelerates leafy growth, but too much of it can limit the growth of flowers, which can slow the appearance of fruit.

  2. Phosphorus promotes root growth and speeds up blooming, but too much of it can block the absorption of micronutrients and cause yellow leaves.

  3. Potassium enables plants to withstand drought and disease more easily, but excessive potassium salts can disrupt the balance of water in plants.

  4. Calcium helps plants take up other nutrients and improves root formation, but too much of it lowers soil acidity and may block root uptake of other nutrients.

  5. Magnesium helps form chlorophyll, but too much can limit the uptake of critical potassium and interfere with the absorption of calcium and nitrogen.
