Unlike someone's first (home) or second (work) places, a third place allows them to be at ease and enjoy the company of others in their community.
Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term with his 1989 book "The Great Good Place."
Oldenurg argues that these places are essential for democracy and the success of a community.
