The first shopping mall in the US was designed by Victor Gruen, a European architect who wanted to create community spaces that weren’t dominated by cars.
Gruen, inspired by European plazas, created an indoor shopping mall that people could access year-round in Edina, MN, in 1956.
The mix of stores and community spaces that keep people in the mall (and often lead to them spending more money) was dubbed the “Gruen transfer.”
The “transfer” refers to the shopper transferring their attention from needs to wants.
