Tsunamis are a series of waves rather than a single one, and boats are safer from them in deeper waters, where tsunami waves are smaller.

The waves that make up a tsunami—collectively known as the wave train—grow in height and become compressed as they approach the shore, with their arrivals separated by about 5 to 60 minutes.
As with earthquakes, a tsunami's energy is greatest where it forms, but in deep waters, the energy is diluted over a larger column of water, thereby creating waves less than one meter (3.28 feet) high.
