When two adjacent layers of fluid move at different speeds—typically as a result of having different temperatures and densities—the region where they meet becomes unstable, and differences in pressure enhance the size of ripples in the slower fluid, which is pushed into a spiral by the faster-moving fluid.
Named after physicists Hermann von Helmholtz and Lord Kelvin, Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities serve as pathways for the transition from smooth laminar flow to turbulent flow, with spirals becoming eddies that chaotically mix substances.
