Findings

Additional insights we found via minutephysics

  1. Just as individual particles in a river move chaotically in many directions on a microscopic scale but travel downstream overall, the particles that make up the molecular clouds that form planetary systems can be modeled as moving in random directions and speeds while giving the cloud a collective, net rotation, quantified by a variable called angular momentum.

  2. The angular momentum of an isolated system of particles bound by gravity does not change as the particles collide, maintaining the system's preferred plane of rotation, while motion above and below the plane is canceled out, flattening the system.

  3. After sufficient time has passed, collisions among matter in a gravitationally bound molecular cloud will produce larger objects, such as planets, that orbit the system's center of mass in the same direction, thereby maintaining the system's initial angular momentum.

  4. In two dimensions of space, molecular clouds would flatten into a line, but in four dimensions, matter would rotate in two perpendicular planes while conserving angular momentum.
