While a controlled fire has been completely surrounded by barriers that prevent its spread—control lines—it may continue to burn within the perimeter until it is declared extinguished.
Once fires have been extinguished, firefighters conduct a mop-up to stamp out hotspots and smoldering material to prevent reignition.
