Running a ribbon around the edge of a blade creates curls because it stretches its outer side beyond the yield—the limit at which a material can be deformed but still return to its original shape once the force is removed.

Additional insights we found via SciShow

  1. Since the outside of the ribbon makes a wider turn around the blade than the inside, it can be stretched beyond the yield more than the inside, creating permanent deformities.

  2. Tighter curls can be created using a sharper blade, which provides sharper turns, and by pulling more slowly and with more force, which gives the ribbon more time to stretch and amplifies the effect.
