Sidearm pitchers—who throw the ball at an odd angle, sometimes very close to the ground—are a rarity in modern baseball, which often makes them more difficult for batters to hit.

Additional insights we found via University of Florida

  1. Sidearmers release the ball parallel to their waist; more traditional pitchers release it parallel to their hats.

  2. "Submarine" pitching is a form of sidearm that is even more exaggerated, with the pitcher's arm nearly touching the dirt before launching a pitch that often rises up into the strike zone.

  3. Because there are only a handful of sidearm pitchers in Major League Baseball, batters often struggle to adjust, giving sidearm pitchers a real advantage, even if their speed is unremarkable.

  4. Their rarity poses a challenge, too: Pitching coaches sometimes struggle to offer advice on mechanics, leaving sidearm pitchers to work out the kinks of their game on their own.
