  1. Political scientist Erica Chenoweth studied hundreds of campaigns from 1900 to 2006 and found nonviolent movements succeeded twice as often as violent ones.

  2. Peaceful campaigns tend to draw far more participants than violent ones, since they carry fewer physical barriers and risks.

  3. Chenoweth found that once a movement engaged 3.5% of a population, it had never failed to achieve its goals.
