Around 10% of Americans believe they are allergic to penicillin, but this podcast discusses why research suggests fewer than 1% actually are. Allergy misdiagnoses are due to factors such as the initial reaction not being a true allergy or the allergy fading.
Penicillin was discovered accidentally roughly 100 years ago by Alexander Fleming, and went on to be used as a treatment for maladies including strep throat, meningitis, dental infections, gonorrhea, and more.
Penicillin is still prescribed at the highest rate of any antibiotic.
