Leprosy bacteria are sometimes grown on mouse feet for research since the pathogens can't be grown in a petri dish.

Additional insights we found via National Library of Medicine

  1. For research purposes, the bacteria have been grown in the foot pads of mice because otherwise they couldn't readily be studied in a lab setting.

  2. Though the bacteria can grow on mouse feet, no leprosy-like lesions are produced in these animals.
