With less than 50 milligrams present in the top kilometer of Earth's crust at any given time, astatine is the rarest naturally occurring element on the planet.

Additional insights we found via Chemistry in its Element

  1. Formed in one of the intermediate steps of the radioactive decay of uranium into lighter elements, the average astatine-210 atom has a lifetime of about 11.7 hours.

  2. When astatine-211 decays, it produces alpha particles that can damage cells with an impact equivalent to 10,000 electrons, which has led researchers to investigate its potential use in radiotherapy-based cancer treatments.

  3. Because of astatine's rarity and short half-life, many of its chemical properties have been inferred from the characteristics of other elements in its group on the periodic table, such as fluorine and chlorine.
