HALEU, or High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium, is a next-generation nuclear fuel with higher energy density—three tablespoons of it are enough to supply the average person's electricity use for their entire lifetime.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Bloomberg Originals

  1. While standard nuclear fuel is enriched to about 3-5% uranium-235, HALEU is enriched to about 20%, enabling smaller nuclear reactor designs.

  2. Uranium ore is about 0.7% U-235, but enrichment yields a product with a higher concentration needed for reactors by separating U-235 from U-238 using a centrifuge.

  3. Demand for uranium is expected to more than double by 2040 amid rising energy needs from data centers and decarbonization efforts to meet global climate goals.
