Although they rely on radioactive elements to operate, everyday technologies such as electronic exit signs, some wristwatches, and smoke detectors are not dangerous, unless they are damaged and their radioactive material is inhaled or swallowed.

Glow-in-the-dark timepieces contain gaseous tritium—hydrogen atoms with two extra neutrons—which emit low-energy beta particles that react with surrounding elements to produce light, making the watchface visible without batteries.
Exit signs also contain tritium sealed in a tubed lined with phosphor, which glows upon being struck by tritium's emitted beta particles.
In smoke detectors, a steady flow of ions generated by americium-241 moves between oppositely charged plates, but smoke particles disrupt this flow.
Some gemstones are intentionally irradiated to enhance their color by altering the crystal's atomic structure.
