Some theorists have suggested that dark matter consists of supersymmetric particles—massive, hypothetical versions of known particles, such as the sneutrino, which is the supersymmetric partner of the neutrino.

Supersymmetry states that the equations that govern matter particles and the particles that mediate forces are identical, such that every type of particle has a superpartner, and while there is no evidence of supersymmetry, the theory can help explain certain gaps in the Standard Model—the most comprehensive theory of particle physics.
Because of their enormous mass relative to other particles, the production of superpartners requires substantial energy, which may explain why they have not yet been detected at particle accelerator facilities, as well as why they may have been present in the universe since the Big Bang—a requirement of current models of dark matter.
Supersymmetric dark matter particle candidates that can contribute significant mass in large numbers but are extremely difficult to detect, like the neutralino, fall into a class of particles called WIMPs, or weakly interacting massive particles.
