Horsehead-shaped features seen on the sun and the clouds of Earth and Jupiter are examples of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, where a faster-moving fluid rolls atop a slower-moving fluid.

When two adjacent layers of fluid move at different speeds—typically as a result of having different temperatures and densities—the region where they meet becomes unstable, and differences in pressure cause ripples in the slower fluid to grow in size before their peaks are pushed into a spiral by the faster-moving fluid.
Just as a stationary object dropped on a moving treadmill will roll as the proverbial rug is pulled out from beneath it, Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities can form at the interface between a moving and a stationary fluid.
Named after physicists Hermann von Helmholtz and Lord Kelvin, Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities serve as pathways for the transition from smooth laminar flow to turbulent flow, with spirals becoming eddies that chaotically mix substances.
