  2. The first high-profile signing he made for Columbia Records was Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis Joplin's group, after seeing them at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.

  3. He founded Arista Records in 1974 and signed Patti Smith, a figurehead of American punk rock, and Barry Manilow, a massively popular pop vocalist.

  4. Davis famously told Bruce Springsteen that if he wanted to escape comparisons to Bob Dylan, he would need to be more active on stage.

  5. He provided distribution for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records, the home of "Philadelphia soul" and a legion of classic singles.
