Monsoons are large, seasonal shifts in wind direction driven by differences in the heating of land and sea.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Met Office

  1. Because land heats and cools faster than water, pressure differences form between the two surfaces, driving significant sea breezes.

  2. As moist air is pulled onto land by these breezes, it rises, condenses, and leads to a substantial rainy season, while shifts in the opposite direction can produce a very dry season.

  3. Monsoon comes from the Arabic word “mausim,” meaning "season," referring to the appearance of these breezes as the seasons change.

  4. About 60% of the global population lives in areas that are affected by monsoons.

  5. Monsoons account for 80% of rainfall in India, and 70% of its population relies on these rains for agriculture.
