Recent global health estimates suggest that inactivity is a leading risk factor for death, contributing to 6% of deaths worldwide.

Findings

Additional insights we found via National Institutes of Health

  1. The World Health Organization identifies physical inactivity as the fourth leading modifiable risk factor for global mortality, just behind hypertension, tobacco use, and high blood glucose.

  2. Inactivity significantly increases the burden of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

  3. Exercise recommendations differ by age. Children ages five to 17 should get at least an hour of daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, most of which should be aerobic.

  4. Adults should engage in 150 minutes of aerobic exercise and two sessions of muscle-strengthening exercises (resistance training) weekly.
