In 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute placed million-dollar bounties on seven unsolved problems in mathematics—the Millennium Prize Problems—in the hopes of spurring solutions.

  1. As of 2026, only one of the problems, the Poincaré conjecture, which states that any 3D object that can be shrunk into a point must be a sphere under certain conditions, has been solved, though the prize was turned down by Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman.

  2. Among the problems is the question of P vs NP, which asks whether a computer can find a solution to a problem as fast as it can check whether the solution is correct, and the problem of finding a 3D solution to the Navier-Stokes equation, which describes the motion of fluids but becomes unpredictable over time.

  3. The unsolved Millennium Problems also include the Riemann hypothesis, which concerns deviations from the average distribution of prime numbers, and the Yang-Mills and mass gap, which suggests a gap in the solutions to certain quantum equations.

  4. The Hodge conjecture asks whether higher-dimensional spaces can be explained using simpler algebraic equations, while the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture links the set of solutions to equations describing elliptical curves to the behavior of an algorithm called the L-function.
