By the 1960s, anti-authoritarian, libertarian, and religious groups began exploring homeschooling options and forming advocacy groups to inform families about the legality and pedagogy of homeschooling.
By 1985, it was estimated that 200,000 families were homeschooling, though many states required parents to hold a teaching certificate to legally homeschool their children.
Michigan was the last state to legalize homeschooling in 1993.
