Released in 2024, the polarized image of Sagittarius A* shows that the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way exhibits powerful, spiraling magnetic fields.

Findings

Additional insights we found via European Southern Observatory

  1. The presence of a magnetic field structure in Sgr A* resembling that of the supermassive black hole at the center of M87, which studies have shown possesses jets that launch material into the environment, suggests that Sgr A* likely has hidden jets.

  2. Imaging polarized light from heated gas near black holes allows astronomers to indirectly image and infer properties about how black holes feed and eject material.
