Additional insights we found via Aperture

  1. Lange and Paul Taylor were first paired together in a 1934 issue of "Survey Graphic," with Taylor's writing complementing a photo of a labor organizer taken by Lange.

  2. The two married soon after (it was Lange's second marriage) and began working together on books and reports, creating what Lange's biographer, Linda Gordon, called a sort of visual sociology.

  3. Taylor was an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, and framed Lange's photography in a larger context.

  4. “We use the camera as a tool of research," Lange and Taylor explained in the introduction to their book "American Exodus." "Upon a tripod of photographs, captions, and text, we rest themes evolved out of long observations in the field.”
