Many of Dorothea Lange's most iconic photos were taken while she was working for a New Deal program.

Additional insights we found via University of Washington

  1. The Farm Security Administration, originally called the Resettlement Administration, was a New Deal effort created to combat rural poverty.

  2. In 1935, the FSA launched an initiative to hire photographers to document the lives of American farmers.

  3. Lange's photographs for the FSA documented how the Depression impacted the farmers and their families.

  4. Lange became particularly interested in documenting the lives of migrant farmers in California, many of whom moved there to escape the effects of the Dust Bowl in the midwestern states.
