  1. Lange and Adams began documenting the towns of St. George, Toquerville, and Gunlock in 1953, seeking to capture the traditional ways of life of the Mormon communities that populated them.

  2. The work was eventually published as a 10-page photo essay in a 1954 issue of Life magazine, though both Lange and Adams were disappointed with what they felt was an oversimplification of their work.
