Brown dwarfs are nicknamed 'failed stars' because, while much more massive than planets, they lack sufficient mass to initiate nuclear fusion in their cores and become stars.

According to the International Astronomical Union, brown dwarfs, or "super Jupiters," have masses between 1.2% and 8% that of the sun, or 12 to 80 times that of Jupiter, which is enough to briefly fuse deuterium, a heavier form of hydrogen.
While the IAU has distinguished between gas giant planets and brown dwarfs based on the latter's ability to fuse deuterium, some astronomers have suggested distinguishing them by metal content or formation method—brown dwarfs form from the collapse of gas clouds, while planets form from the accumulation of leftover material.
Research has found overlaps in the distributions of brown dwarf and gas giant planet characteristics, which has increasingly complicated distinguishing between these celestial objects at the boundary conditions set by the IAU.
