The cells were originally taken from the tumor of an unconscious Henrietta Lacks in 1951 by her doctors, who took both a healthy tissue sample and a tumor sample without her knowledge or consent.
Scientists now order HeLa cells from a catalog, with costs in 2026 listed as higher than $950 per sample.
The cells have been widely used in biomedical research, including for vaccine research and understanding the cellular effects of radiation from a nuclear bomb
