Vemma reached a $238M settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over its pyramid scheme-style recruitment tactics that targeted college boys to sell energy drinks in the early 2010s.

Additional insights we found via Truth in Advertising

  1. Vemma’s main product, the Verve energy drink, claimed sweeping health benefits and marketed itself as a healthy alternative to other energy drinks.

  2. Most of Vemma’s sellers were college boys, who had to pay $600 to become a vendor and then sell at least $150 of product each month.

  3. Both of Vemma founder Benson K. Boreyko’s parents were Amway distributors. Boreyko himself was an Amway distributor before starting Vemma.
