These MoonFall drones will first launch in 2028 and be placed along a perimeter to gather information where the future lunar base is intended to be built.
NASA also intends to land at least one lunar terrain vehicle, which can be remotely controlled from Earth in late 2028.
These efforts are part of phase one of the lunar base's construction, which runs until 2029 and is focused on identifying and securing reliable access between different sites.
From 2029 to 2032, phase two will involve establishing logistical operations, including surface-to-orbit communications networks, and deploying solar and nuclear surface power systems.
By 2032, continuous surface activity via rotating crews will help scale operations in semi-permanent habitation modules.
