According to Confederate leaders, the defense of slavery was the primary reason for secession.

  1. In March 1861, Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens declared slavery "the immediate cause of the late rupture," calling it the "cornerstone" of the new Confederate government.

  2. When Mississippi seceded, it published a formal declaration stating its position was "thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery"

  3. Most professional historians agree that slavery was at the heart of the crisis, though the North's initial war goal was preserving the Union, not emancipation.
